As stated in the UN Charter, one of the most important purposes of the UN is "to maintain international peace and security and, to that end, to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats." Peacekeeping provides the UN with one of the means of achieving international peace and security. It has developed as a pragmatic response to problems requiring the UN's actions. In this lesson, you will be provided with a basic working knowledge of the UN structure, principles, and general functions of its different organs.
