Free Tuition for All.

About the Course: The aim of these training materials is to provide troop-contributing countries with a comprehensive training package that combines aspects of POC, Child Protection, and Conflict-Related Sexual Violence for military peacekeepers at the tactical level in UN peacekeeping operations. This programme combines elements of each of the three subject matter areas into an overall approach to tactical level protection issues. It includes a protection threat assessment process to inform planning and several small exercises as well as a larger scenario-based exercise, which can be run at the end of a course to strengthen participants’ understanding how POC, Child Protection, and Conflict-Related Sexual Violence considerations affect military planning processes at the tactical level.

"Overall Experience The course provided a comprehensive and well-structured overview of the protection of civilians (POC) in UN peace operations. It effectively covered key principles, legal frameworks, operational guidelines, and real-world challenges. The materials were clear, informative, and relevant to military personnel deployed in peacekeeping missions. Strengths Thorough Content: The course effectively covers international humanitarian law, rules of engagement, and the use of force in peacekeeping operations. Focus on Civilian Protection: Emphasis on practical strategies to safeguard vulnerable populations was particularly valuable. Gender Considerations: The inclusion of gender-related topics, including conflict-related sexual violence and the protection of children, was insightful. Scenarios and Case Studies: Real-world examples helped contextualize key principles. Areas for Improvement More Interactive Elements: Practical exercises, role-playing scenarios, or simulations could enhance engagement and understanding. Field-Based Case Studies: More mission-specific case studies from recent UN deployments would improve practical applicability. Expanded Gender Sensitivity Training: While gender issues were addressed, more focus on integrating gender perspectives in military decision-making and leadership roles would be beneficial. Assessments and Feedback: More frequent knowledge checks and scenario-based assessments could reinforce learning. Suggestions for Improvement in Gender Issues To better tailor the course to field operations, gender training should include: More in-depth discussions on cultural sensitivities related to gender in different mission areas. Guidance on working effectively with local women’s groups and civil society organizations. Enhanced training on recognizing, preventing, and responding to gender-based violence in conflict zones. Final Thoughts This course is an essential resource for military personnel in UN peacekeeping missions. Strengthening its practical application through interactive elements and deeper gender-focused training would make it even more effective."

The course effectively covers legal frameworks, operational strategies, and real-world case studies that enhance understanding of the protection of civilians in conflict zones. The interactive elements and practical scenarios are particularly valuable, offering a realistic perspective on decision-making in complex environments. However, incorporating more recent case studies and expanding on coordination with humanitarian agencies could further improve the course. Overall, this training is highly informative and essential for anyone involved in peacekeeping operations. I would recommend it to military personnel preparing for UN missions."
