About the Course: While informative for any student interested in the topic, this course was specially designed for those who work in the area of peace and security at the national or regional levels in Africa and require a practical tool to support the implementation of the women, peace, and security agenda. The first three lessons broadly focus on the role the United Nations plays in promoting peace and security, highlighting the importance of employing a gender perspective in the field and the role of United Nations Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) and subsequent resolutions. Within this context, Lessons 4 and 5 highlight the challenges and priorities specific to Africa. Finally, Lesson 6 examines the role of regional and subregional organizations in facilitating the national implementation of the resolutions.

The updated edition of this course covers best practices for gender mainstreaming within a mission, recent National Action Plans across Africa, and evolving strategies for enhancing women’s meaningful political participation in the region. Six lessons, 195 pages.

This course was developed by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in collaboration with POTI.

The Institute thanks Jennifer Wittwer, CSM, and Colonel (Retired) Jesus Ignacio Gil Ruiz for their valuable contributions to this course.

"The course is highly informative, of world class academic standard and quite practical. It added so much value to my earlier thesis on the impact of Boko Haram insurgency on human security in the Northeast geopolitical zones of Nigeria. While applauding the push and strides so far achieved in the area of gender equity in favour of women in Africa and across the globe, my critique is on its elitist nature, as it technically excludes "supposed illitrate" but influencial rural women from effectively participating in high leadership positions for instance in UN and its critical organs. Indeed, women, so many who are eminently qualified and are positively making waves in all spheres of life across the globe, should as a matter of right occupy their pride of places in critical leadership positions at the national and international institutions. It has been a wonderful experience participating in this awesome course. I look forward to taking up courses in Peace and Security Studies and becoming global peace ambassador. Kind regards, Okpo FC, fsi, fspsp, PhD."
