Human Rights

About the Course: This course is a comprehensive historical overview of the theory and practice of human rights, a term used to describe rights and entitlements that inherently belong to every human being. Although all human beings are entitled to these rights equally, history has shown that all people do not enjoy the same protection of their rights at all times. This course explores the different kinds of human rights, the various international and regional documents necessary to protect and enforce them, and the historical difficulties and conflicts that have occurred in spite of, and often because of, human rights. It includes extensive discussions on the development of the various human rights treaties and enforcement mechanisms, the special protection given to vulnerable groups, human rights during armed conflict, and current debates involving human rights, such as the use of technology either to promote or restrict human rights, and the increasing international significance of stateless actors like transnational corporations and terrorist groups. Fifteen lessons.

"Here are some ways the online Human Rights course could be improved to better incorporate gender perspectives and tailor the content to apply to real-world field work: - Include a module specifically focused on women's rights and gender equality issues in the human rights framework. Cover topics like the evolution of women's rights, gender mainstreaming, and CEDAW. - Expand the case studies and examples to intentionally highlight gender-related human rights violations, women human rights defenders, gender discrimination in law and practice, etc. - Discuss how gender intersects with other vulnerability factors like race, class, sexual orientation, disability status, etc. and compound discrimination. - Provide concrete guidance on applying a gender lens when monitoring, reporting on, and documenting human rights violations in the field. - Incorporate more specifics on implementing UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security across topics like conflict-related sexual violence, women in peace processes, protection of women and girls, etc. - Include checklists, practical tips, and key questions for incorporating gender perspectives into human rights field work. - Highlight the work of women's rights organizations and activists, and discuss best practices for engaging women at the community level. - Use gender-neutral and inclusive language throughout the course materials. - Tailor examples and scenarios to different cultural contexts where human rights field work may occur. Overall, a focus on practical application of concepts to address women's rights and gender issues could make the course much more relevant to field work."
