There are several forms of structural and institutional violence (terms we define in Lesson 4) that disproportionately impact women. These include female infanticide, a phenomenon referred to as the “female deficit,” maternal mortality, and the persistence of socioeconomic inequalities related to gender. In Lesson 8 you will study specific examples of these inequalities and how they reinforce the course’s overall argument: violence against women cannot be eliminated if we don’t address the global tendency for women to have less power and/or less control over resources, than men do, on average. While some women may have more power, access to resources, or control over those resources, than some men do, if we look at averages both within and across cultures, we find that there are widespread patterns of systemic socioeconomic inequality between women and men.
