Landmines and other explosive remnants of war (ERW) plague more than 50 countries and continue to cause civilian casualties decades after conflict has ended. The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has collaborated with POTI to develop this course, which offers a comprehensive introduction to the policies, procedures, and standards that shape Mine Action activity around the world. The material seeks to empower students with the knowledge to champion the vision of the United Nations of “a world free of the threat of mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), including cluster munitions, where individuals and communities live in a safe environment conducive to development and where the human rights and the needs of mine and ERW victims are met and survivors are fully integrated as equal members of their societies.”

Topics include The Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty; mine action guidelines for ceasefires and peace agreements; landmine and ERW safety training; identifying landmines and ERW; International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) and guidelines for application; victim assistance; mine risk education; mine action assessment; and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Les mines terrestres et autres restes explosifs de guerre (REG) sévissent dans plus de 50 pays et continuent de faire des victimes civiles plusieurs décennies après la fin des conflits. Le Service de la lutte antimines des Nations Unies a collaboré avec le POTI pour élaborer ce cours, qui offre une introduction complète aux politiques, procédures et normes régissant les activités de lutte antimines dans le monde entier. Le matériel vise à donner aux étudiants les connaissances nécessaires pour défendre la vision des Nations Unies d’« un monde exempt de la menace des mines terrestres et des munitions non explosées, où les individus et les communautés vivent dans un environnement sûr propice au développement, et où les survivants des mines sont pleinement intégrés dans leurs sociétés. »

"The course, Mine Action and Explosive Hazard Management, provided a comprehensive understanding of the humanitarian, operational, and institutional challenges associated with landmines, explosive remnants of war, and explosive hazard management within conflict and post-conflict environments. The programme highlighted the importance of coordinated risk management, civilian protection, safety protocols, and multi-sectoral collaboration in reducing harm and supporting community stabilization. A key strength of the course was its focus on the integration of safety governance, risk assessment, community awareness, and operational planning within mine action frameworks.
