Greetings, and welcome to the Peace Operations Training Institute distance-training course, "Gender Perspectives in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations." My name is Professor Ximena Jimenez, and I am the author of this course. The course was specially designed for those who are operating in conflict areas, including military, police, and UN civilian personnel at all levels, as well as those personnel working in governmental and non-governmental organizations who are interested in gaining awareness on gender issues in peace operations. This course strives to educate all interested individuals that want to learn about the conceptual and operational issues involved in integrating a gender perspective in complex peace operations. The course describes in general terms the problems related to gender issues surrounding international modern conflict by analyzing how it has evolved through time. The course also addresses how gender balance and equality allows women to stop being victimized in the conflict theatre. In addition, the course emphasizes the need for women to have a strategic role at all UN decision-making levels, at the mission level, and at government and local levels. Upon completion of the course, you should have a firm understanding of the basic concepts and principles of incorporating a gender perspective into a peacekeeping mission. If you have any questions regarding the course, please contact me via the Student-Teacher Communication Form at the URL below. Thank you for enrolling in Peace Operations Training Institute distance training, and I wish you success in your studies of United Nations peacekeeping.
