It is essential that MILOBS and peacekeepers of all nations-whether military, UN police, or civilian-understand and respect the legal framework for UN peacekeeping operations in order to ensure successful implementation of the mission mandate. This lesson presents basic information on this legal framework, including the process by which the UN initiates an operation; the principles and laws that govern it; the documents that provide legal guidance; and its impact on the UN peacekeeper.
