In Lesson 13 you will conclude the discussion on human rights during armed conflict through an examination of the last branch of law designed to protect human rights during wartime: international criminal law. You will identify the two primary aims of ICL: prohibiting conduct and punishing violators, and specify what types of crimes fall under its jurisdiction—such as, genocide, torture, and crimes against humanity—and what crimes do not, such as human trafficking, drug trafficking, and money laundering. The lesson provides a historical overview on the development of ICL and of the role of the International Criminal Court as specified in the Rome Statute, excerpts of which are provided at the end of the lesson.
