About the Course: While informative for any student interested in the topic, this course was specially designed for those who work in the area of peace and security at the national or regional levels in Africa and require a practical tool to support the implementation of the women, peace, and security agenda. The first three lessons broadly focus on the role the United Nations plays in promoting peace and security, highlighting the importance of employing a gender perspective in the field and the role of United Nations Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) and subsequent resolutions. Within this context, Lessons 4 and 5 highlight the challenges and priorities specific to Africa. Finally, Lesson 6 examines the role of regional and subregional organizations in facilitating the national implementation of the resolutions.

The updated edition of this course covers best practices for gender mainstreaming within a mission, recent National Action Plans across Africa, and evolving strategies for enhancing women’s meaningful political participation in the region. Six lessons, 195 pages.

This course was developed by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in collaboration with POTI.

À propos du cours : Bien qu'informatif pour tout étudiant intéressé par le sujet, ce cours a été spécialement conçu pour ceux qui travaillent dans le domaine de la paix et de la sécurité aux niveaux national ou régional en Afrique et qui ont besoin d'un outil pratique pour soutenir la mise en œuvre de l'initiative femmes, paix et programme de sécurité. Les trois premières leçons portent globalement sur le rôle que joue l'ONU dans la promotion de la paix et de la sécurité, soulignant l'importance d'employer une perspective de genre sur le terrain et le rôle de la résolution 1325 (2000) du Conseil de sécurité des Nations Unies et des résolutions ultérieures. Dans ce contexte, les Leçons 4 et 5 mettent en évidence les défis et les priorités spécifiques à l'Afrique. Enfin, la Leçon 6 examine le rôle des organisations régionales et sous-régionales dans la facilitation de la mise en œuvre nationale des résolutions.

"Being chosen to participate in this wonderful programme has been an amazing opportunity and privilege (Introduction: Implementation of the UN Security Council: Resolution on the WRS Agenda in Africa). Bravo to the management team; there will be more victories! I have been able to learn, unlearn, and relearn in all areas of the programme happily during the course. It has truly opened my eyes to the issues of security, conflict, and resolution, among other things. Resolution on the WRS Agenda in Africa is how the UN Security Council is being implemented. It will undoubtedly inspire me to act with great selflessness and resolve in order to improve the quality of life for everyone. The learners would want to be the best in all of their endeavours because no person, regardless of gender, has an advantage over another in terms of opportunities and privileges to excel in their profession, career, or God-given skill. Cross-gendering the learners, regardless of their ages, religions, or sexes, will enable them to relate, create, and harmonise a peaceful teamwork and non-bia partisan among themselves through one of the countless means I will employ that will bring complete tranquilly, accountability, and exposure to the learners as a whole. This will reflect in their work they will be doing on and off the field through group works, tasks, homeworks, and assignments."
