The Nile has given life to the desert communities of North-East Africa for millennia and its flow remains critical to the livelihood of both Egypt and Sudan. Numerous projects and policies have been undertaken over the past century to improve the flow consistency of Nile waters as well as control its annual floods. These initiatives have taken the forms of reservoirs, canals and dams constructed throughout its length, although most notably within the borders of Egypt and Northern Sudan. These projects and programs have succeeded in ‘taming’ the Nile and allowed for large-scale agricultural projects to take shape and flourish in what would otherwise be a lifeless desert.
