Welcome to Lesson 2. In this lesson, we take a step back and look at the history of United Nations peace operations. We look at the early missions starting in the late-1940s in the Middle East, and we move on to more contemporary missions, like the African Union-United Nations hybrid mission in Darfur, which really has a core protection of civilians mandate, or missions that have a more post-conflict peacebuilding focus, like the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, MONUSCO. We end this lesson with a focus on the United Nations Mission in Liberia, UNMIL.
