Greetings, and welcome to the Peace Operations Training Institute distance-training course "United Nations Military Observers: Methods and Techniques for Serving on a UN Observer Mission." My name is Lieutenant Colonel Phyllis Mihalas of the United States Army, and I am the author of this course. Over the years, peacekeeping missions have become more dangerous and complex. The change in the environment has made it necessary to provide comprehensive training on the individual, small group, and unit levels for those who serve as Military Observers and peacekeepers. This course will assist in training Military Observers by enhancing their general understanding of peacekeeping and by providing specific knowledge of methods and techniques for serving on a United Nations mission. Beginning with a strategic overview of the United Nations organization, the course moves through the operational spectrum of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and ends at the tactical level of "on the ground" knowledge and skills required for an individual MILOB to succeed. If you have any questions regarding the course, please contact me via the Student-Teacher Communication Form at the URL below. Thank you for enrolling in Peace Operations Training Institute distance training, and I wish you every success in your studies of United Nations Peacekeeping.
