In Lesson 5 the concept of cultural relativism is introduced as it relates to notions of violence and the protection of human rights. The lesson raises several questions, such as: why would some forms of violence against women be considered “cultural” as opposed to “criminal”? How are these differences in terminology related to the nationality, gender, religion, or ethnicity of both the definer and her or his audience? Are human rights universal? Using case studies, this lesson will help you formulate your own answers to these questions and to critically evaluate situations in which there appear to be conflicts between different sets of cultural norms.
