Lesson 2 begins by identifying the remaining two components of the International Bill of Human Rights: the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, or the ICCPR, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the ICESCR. After discussing the arguments for and against the need to distinguish between the two types of human rights and their corresponding covenants—civil and political versus economic, social, and cultural—you will focus on the former, learning to specify what these rights are and outlining the different parts of the ICCPR that protect them. The lesson closes with a brief section that identifies other instruments that protect civil and political rights at the international and national levels. You will also find excerpts of the ICCPR at the end of the lesson.
