Lesson 1 begins with a brief description of the components of UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace, and security. It then proceeds to explain the development of this landmark resolution and its relationship to women’s peace and human rights activism throughout the twentieth century. Upon completion of this lesson, you should be off to a good start in understanding the roots and scope of violence against women worldwide. You will also understand the implications of “gender mainstreaming” for peacekeeping and for the implementation of SCR 1325.
