UN Security Council OKs Peacekeeping Mission in Mali

Published: 04-25-13

The UN Security council, in a unanimous vote, approved the formation of a new peacekeeping mission in Mali. The mission will be named United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

Here is the text of Mali's Foreign Minister Tiéman Coulibaly, address to the Security Council following the vote:

"Mali is fully prepared to welcome this mission which will be concentrated, amongst other things, on stabilising the main urban centres in the north, restoring the authority of the state, providing support for the roadmap, including political dialogue and the electoral process; the protection of civilians, the promotion and protection of human rights, as well as humanitarian assistance."

MINUSMA is scheduled to deploy in July for an initial period of 12 months.
