Greetings, and welcome to the Peace Operations Training Institute distance-training course Preventing Violence Against Women. My name is AnnJanette Rosga, and I am the author of this course. The course is based in part on the book Women in an Insecure World, which was published by the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) in 2005. That book and this course confront the reality that gender inequality affects all of our lives, regardless of how old we are, what national or ethnic identities we claim, or our biological sex. One of the features of gender inequality is that it appears both in public and in private spaces. This can make the issue more challenging to discuss, understand, or change. This course aims to assist peacekeeping personnel in their efforts to achieve lasting peace by exploring the complex relationships between gender, violence and cultural norms. By examining conflict, security, and governance through a gender lens, it encourages you to think about how you can work to minimize gender inequality in your role as a peacekeeper. It discusses how our understandings of terms like “gender,” “culture,” and “violence” can affect how we understand – and thus value and uphold – international human rights. Finally, the course explains the scope and varieties of violence against women, as well as why the pursuit of gender equality is so important for sustainable peace. If you have any questions regarding this course, please contact me via the Student-Teacher Communication Form at the URL below. I would be happy to hear from you. Thank you for enrolling in the Peace Operations Training Institute distance learning program. I wish you every success in your studies of United Nations peacekeeping.
