In this final lesson, you will identify and examine two other current issues involving human rights: LGBT rights and technology. The lesson discusses the growing recognition of LGBT rights, but also acknowledges the strong opposition against it, often a product of moral or religious convictions against homosexuality. The second section discusses the various issues involving human rights and technology, such as censorship, intellectual property, privacy, and the “digital divide.” Upon completion of this lesson, you should be able to discuss the general effectiveness of human rights and explore whether or not the vast and growing international human rights system protects—in reality—the human rights of individuals and peoples. The lesson ends by raising some scholars’ controversial suggestion that human rights may sometimes contribute more to the world’s problems than they do to any real solutions.
