Mark H. Sweberg is a Senior Policy Development Lead and Interagency Management System Subject Matter Expert in the U.S. Joint Forces Command J-9 Directorate and the Director for United States Programmes for the Institute. Mr. Sweberg was a career Civil Service Officer in the Department of State for eight years, from 1997 to 2005, where he was the Director of the Enhanced International Peacekeeping Capabilities programme and Deputy Director of the Office for Contingency Planning and Peacekeeping in the Political-Military Bureau.
Mr. Sweberg retired from the U.S. Army in 1994, having served twenty-two years on active duty. During his career, he served as a Military Intelligence Officer and a Middle East Foreign Area Expert. His varied positions included several tours with UN peacekeeping missions, including UNTSO, UNIFIL and UNDOF. He served as chief operations officer for UNTSO in 1989. Mr. Sweberg also served as a senior civilian Peace Verification Observer with the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) in the Sinai, as well as chief of training and protocol officer for that organization.
Mark Sweberg graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He holds a master’s degree (MA) in International Relations from the University of Southern California and a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Puget Sound.
