Course description

The aim of this course is to prepare officers for service as Military Observers in any UN mission and particularly for the current UN operations.

Contents:

-- Organizations, past and present Peace Support Operations (PSO)
-- Observer and monitor duties, emphasis on reporting procedures
-- Political, social, religious and other factors prevailing in the mission areas
-- Other abilities to enable the individual officer to solve the tasks which might be imposed upon him/her immediately subsequent to his/her arrival in the mission area
-- Climatic, topographical and environmental factors under which service may have to be conducted

The course is three weeks long, run by the Staff (Finland) and Instructors (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden), some 15 personnel altogether. On the first week students get the basic knowledge about Peace Support Operations (PSO), theoretic information of observer duties, on the second week they focus to perform as observers, even learn how to use an interpreter, negotiate and mediate, and finally on the third week their skills are tested in the field exercise. On weekends the students are customised to local culture by short trips in Finland.

The course has 50 seats, from which the most are reserved for the Nordic students and some for the "Non-Nordics" from all over the world. Already 65 nations have participated in the UNMOCs during the years.

Criteria:

-- Be professionally trained with working experience of at least six years (Capt - LtCol)
-- Ability to speak, understand and write the English language at level 2 according STANAG 6001
-- A valid drivers licence
-- Physically fit
-- Basic knowledge of computers
-- The working language is English.
