Description du cours

SCOPE:
This course provides the student with the opportunity to study the doctrine/theory of peace operations and stability, analyze national and international policy and procedures, and examine recent peace and stability operations. The course will focus at both the strategic and operational levels. The course will begin with an overview of the current doctrinal thinking on peace and stability operations and then examine the U.S. national and international policy within the United Nations. It will also focus on several key aspects of peace and stability operations: civil-military relations, information operations, rule of law, and measures of success. In the latter half of the course, students will conduct an analysis of peace and stability operations using the resources of Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute (PKSOI) and AWC. Lastly, the course will look at ongoing or future crises. Students will have preparatory readings for each session. Several guest speakers will amplify some of the lessons and practices.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
- Complete assigned readings as described in the syllabus.
- Actively participate in class discussions.
- Write a 5-6 page paper on an analysis of a past or current crisis and present a 15-minute presentation to the seminar on their findings.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
- Security clearance required: none.
- Course size limitations: Minimum – 6; Maximum – 20.
- Prerequisite: None.
