Welcome to Lesson 3. In this lesson, we focus on the humanitarian aspects. We start by looking at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA. OCHA is responsible for humanitarian coordination both within the UN system, but also including all wider humanitarian actors. OCHA is also responsible for humanitarian civil-military coordination, or UN-CMCoord. And, as you can imagine, UN-CMCoord officers are key counterparts for United Nations military civil-military officers, or UN-CIMIC officers. We end this [lesson] by looking at the United Nations operation in Haiti following the earthquake there, and the specific role that civil-military coordination officers and UN-CMCoord officers played in coordinating the humanitarian and peacekeeping response to that disaster.
