In Lesson 2, you will find expanded definitions of terms such as sex, gender, third gender, masculinity, femininity, sex roles, gender norms, and gender socialization. The lesson also discusses several ways in which sex and gender differences are learned, as well as how these norms are maintained – both by how we conform to them and by how we resist them. It explores how our beliefs about sex and gender difference vary within and across cultures, and how they change over time. The lesson ends with a discussion of how ideologies of sexual difference are related to gender inequality and violence.
