Course description

The overall objective of the UNCMM course is to provide the participants with the knowledge and tools required to carry out and support ceasefire mediation engagements and to be able to implement the principle of the protection of civilians in armed conflicts.

The course aims to provide the participants with improved skills in general mediation and understanding of the different typologies of ceasefires. The course will also focus on the planning and carrying out ceasefire negotiations, drafting of ceasefire agreements, implementing ceasefires, and linking them to the general support to a post-conflict country.

Furthermore, the course will contribute to the development of ceasefire expertise in different institutions and among people with diverging backgrounds. The aim of the training is to allow for the sharing of experiences and to build a small but substantive community of highly skilled experts on the mediation of ceasefires.

The UNCMM course is aimed at participants from the UN system (e.g. UN missions, DPA, UNDP, DPKO, and other UN Mediation Focal Point entities), member state entities (with an emphasis on those with a prominent mediation agenda), international organisations (e.g. EU, NATO), regional organisations (notably AU and African RECs), and civil society/NGOs (including training providers such as the Pearson Center, the Hiroshima Peace-building Center, FBA, Swiss peace, and representatives from NGO monitoring entities in the Philippines and Somalia).
